Jennifer Gilmore, the Director of Marketing and Communications for NC State’s Campus Enterprises, came to speak about her experience in PR. Jennifer is a Wolfpack alumna, and while at NC State, she wrote for Technician and was a part of PRSSA.
“Writing for Technician was the best thing I ever did,” Gilmore said, emphasizing the importance of writing in PR.
Jennifer’s 23-year career in PR gave her quite a bit of experience to talk about — from healthcare to agency work to freelancing, she’s done it all. Currently, she directs Marketing for Campus Enterprises, which includes Dining, Bookstores, Rave! Catering, the Lonnie Poole Golf Course and other NC State entities. She described her job as solving problems, connecting people and providing leadership for her department.
“We run our department like a PR agency,” Jennifer said. “We do a lot of different things all the time.”
All in all, Jennifer said the best things PR students can do now are 1) practice writing, 2) network, 3) find a passion and 4) get an internship.
“I know you hear this all the time, but you’ve got to get an internship,” Jennifer said.
Afterwards, Jennifer stayed and talked with some of the PRSSA members. We thank Jennifer for her time and excellent presentation!
